Bloomberg Launches BQuant Assistant for AI-Powered Financial Coding

Bloomberg has introduced BQuant Assistant, a conversational AI coding assistant integrated into its BQuant Desktop and BQuant Enterprise platforms, designed to help financial professionals write Python code, retrieve financial data and accelerate quantitative analysis.

The tool is available to Bloomberg Terminal subscribers and allows users to interact with the BQuant development environment through natural-language prompts. It can generate Python code, assist with Bloomberg Query Language (BQL) queries, debug existing projects, develop data visualizations and answer questions about BQuant workflows.

BQuant Assistant draws on Bloomberg’s financial data environment, product documentation, example notebooks and libraries to provide context-aware responses tailored to users’ projects. It also supports PyBQL, enabling users to query and analyze Bloomberg datasets across equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, commodities, derivatives and other asset classes.

The assistant can work with data spanning more than 22,000 fields, covering pricing, returns, fundamentals, valuations, risk metrics, economic data and sustainable finance, among other categories. Users can also generate code for screening instruments, defining investment universes, implementing financial models and creating visualizations with open-source tools such as Plotly and Jupyter Widgets.

Another feature allows users to select existing code and ask the assistant to explain it, potentially helping financial professionals develop their Python skills while working on quantitative projects.

BQuant Assistant can insert and execute suggested code directly within an active notebook in the secure BQuant sandbox. However, these actions require user approval, with the assistant identifying proposed actions before accessing or modifying notebook content.

“BQuant Assistant brings AI-driven coding that is informed by Bloomberg’s understanding of financial data and quantitative workflows directly into the workflows our clients already use to build investment strategies,” said Shawn Edwards, Bloomberg’s Chief Technology Officer.

Bloomberg plans to make BQuant Assistant generally available in BQuant Enterprise, while a limited beta for BQuant Desktop is for the end of October 2026.

The launch adds to Bloomberg’s expanding portfolio of AI-enabled financial technology. Recent initiatives include ASKB, the Bloomberg Terminal’s conversational AI interface, and Enterprise Model Context Protocol, an AI access layer for its next-generation Data License offering, Data License Plus. These initiatives aim to help investors and financial institutions access and use Bloomberg’s financial data more efficiently.
