DTCC Annual Systemic Risk Barometer Survey 2025

DTCC has released its annual Systemic Risk Barometer Survey, highlighting the top risks that could impact the financial services industry in 2025. The survey identifies Geopolitical Risk, Cyber Risk, U.S. Political Uncertainty, the U.S. Presidential Election Outcome, Inflation, and a U.S. Economic Slowdown as the primary concerns.

Geopolitical Risk was ranked as the top threat, with 84% of respondents indicating concern. This marks the third consecutive year that geopolitical issues have been the number one risk. Respondents expressed concerns over the potential for significant global events to disrupt financial markets. Geopolitical risks have consistently ranked among the top five since the survey’s inception in 2013, as ongoing global tensions continue to impact market stability.

Also, Cyber Risk, identified by 69% of respondents, has emerged as the second-highest threat. This marks a significant increase from last year’s 50%. Respondents noted that cyber threats are amplified by geopolitical instability, the rise of emerging technologies, and the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks.

Also, U.S. Political Uncertainty and the outcome of the 2024 Presidential Election were ranked third, with 48% of respondents citing them as top concerns. This reflects worries about the potential for election outcomes to trigger political and economic uncertainty, which could increase market volatility.

Inflation and a U.S. Economic Slowdown were also highlighted, with 32% and 31% of respondents, respectively, considering them significant risks for the upcoming year. These concerns are linked to broader economic factors, such as geopolitical instability and the ongoing effects of climate change.

Additionally, FinTech Risk emerged as a major concern, with technologies like AI and machine learning seen as potential threats by 69% of respondents. This highlights the growing importance of managing emerging technological risks as more firms adopt new technologies to meet business objectives.

DTCC’s Systemic Risk Barometer Survey is conducted annually, with the latest survey, the 2024 Risk Forecast, published in December 2023.
