RBC Capital Markets has secured General Clearing Member (GCM) status from European Commodity Clearing AG (ECC), expanding the bank’s ability to provide clearing and settlement services across Europe’s energy and commodity markets.
The new status allows RBC Capital Markets to clear and settle transactions on behalf of Non-Clearing Members (NCMs), broadening its role in the European clearing ecosystem. The move is part of the bank’s continued expansion of its European energy and commodities franchise, which serves major energy producers, utilities and financial institutions.
As an ECC General Clearing Member, RBC Capital Markets can now provide clearing services across power and natural gas futures and spot contracts, as well as European Energy Exchange (EEX) carbon auctions and a wider selection of products available through the EEX platform.
RBC Capital Markets Secures ECC General Clearing Member Status
The expanded clearing capabilities are particularly relevant as European energy markets continue to evolve alongside the energy transition. By extending access to cleared products, RBC Capital Markets can offer clients additional tools for managing market exposure and accessing energy and environmental markets.
“Becoming a General Clearing Member with ECC is a significant step for our clearing and futures business,” said Eric Aldous, global head of clearing services and futures at RBC Capital Markets. He added that the status will allow the bank to expand its reach and provide more resilient access to European energy and commodity markets.
Brandon Everhardt, global head of commodities at RBC Capital Markets, said the GCM status enables the bank to offer clients broader access across commodities, including power, natural gas and environmental products.
ECC provides clearing services for EEX markets, supporting the clearing of transactions across energy and commodity products. EEX offers trading in power, natural gas, environmental and freight products, alongside clearing and regulatory services.
The addition of RBC Capital Markets also expands ECC’s network of General Clearing Members. ECC said the appointment will provide the wider trading community with greater access to EEX energy and commodity markets, while strengthening the clearing infrastructure supporting risk management and transparent trading.
For RBC Capital Markets, the development adds another layer to its European commodities offering, combining broader market access with in-house clearing capabilities for institutional clients operating across increasingly interconnected energy and carbon markets.
