State Street Corporation announced today that it has become the first third-party custodian to join JP Morgan Digital Debt Service, marking a major milestone in the institutional adoption of blockchain-based debt securities.
Also, the collaboration allows State Street to provide custody services for debt instruments issued, settled, and serviced via blockchain technology, delivering a seamless and efficient experience for clients. Currently, the service is available exclusively in the U.S.
Furthermore, the milestone was highlighted by a $100 million commercial paper transaction executed with State Street Investment Management, the firm’s asset management arm. This transaction demonstrates the Digital Debt Service’s ability to modernize short-term debt markets, offering precision-timed settlement and optional T+0 settlement.
JP Morgan and State Street Bring Blockchain to Institutional Debt Markets
As an onboarded custodian, State Street can now give clients access to blockchain-based debt instruments while maintaining traditional standards of security and regulatory compliance. The transaction also illustrates the firm’s integrated approach, with State Street Investment Management acting as the front-office investor and State Street providing middle- and back-office support.
“Through our participation in J.P. Morgan’s Digital Debt Service, we are advancing our ability to deliver a fully integrated front-, middle-, and back-office solution built on blockchain technology,” said Donna Milrod, Chief Product Officer at State Street. “This launch reflects a significant step forward in our digital strategy and our ‘One State Street’ approach, combining institutional-grade infrastructure with emerging digital capabilities to meet evolving client needs.”
The integration offers:
- Precision-Timed Settlement: Reliable, counterparty-risk-reduced settlement infrastructure.
- Streamlined Lifecycle Management: Smart contracts automate payments, redemptions, and corporate actions.
“This partnership represents a transformative movement for institutional asset management,” said Pia McCusker, Global Head of Cash Management for State Street Investment Management. “Our first blockchain-format commercial paper transaction demonstrates tangible benefits for clients and positions them at the forefront of fixed income digital transformation.”
Moreover, Emma Lovett, Credit Lead for J.P. Morgan’s Markets Digital Assets Team, added, “State Street’s participation underscores the growing institutional adoption of blockchain-based debt securities and highlights the efficiency blockchain brings to capital markets.”
